What is the need to read my previous article? In my earlier article I talked about digestive system and its importance which is must for everyone to know. I even talked about which essential oils are usually preferred to maintain gut health which I guess most of us have no clue. I intentionally did not mention anything related to essential oil usage in that article because a complete article is needed to explain that. So here I am with this article just to deliver ways to use essential oils and off course some of essential oil recipe that may help to improve digestion.

Usage of Essential oils:
Essential oil usage is an important topic and I always talk about this in my blogs. These are natural oils extracted from plant parts using process of steam distillation. This is traditional and widespread technique. Essential oils have long been used in the field of medicine and Ayurveda. The use and application of oils was exploited by ancient people.

One could think that to utilize essential oils for gut health, their ingestion is necessary. But it is completely false. Essential oils can be utilized for digestive health mainly through smell and touch. It simply means through aromatic application and topical application of oil. Ingestion of essential oil is not completely safe and is thus not recommended for internal use. We all know the importance of smell or essence in life. Be it the appealing aroma of the food or the scent of our most loved perfume. We tend to get attract and connect with the smell.
Similarly when we inhale a food-related essential oil, molecules from oil emit and traverse through the air and enter nose. The sensory receptors in response of it signals brain about food arrival and brain reacts by altering digestive juices to be released in preparation for the incoming food. In this way essential oils increase and improve digestive process. Smell of essential oils aids in digestion but the topical application of oil also has therapeutic benefits.

Before directly jumping into recipes for good digestive health, I feel like we should indulge into digestion and digestive ailments.
Digestion is a crucial metabolic process where the breakdown of large insoluble food particles into small water-soluble food particles takes place. In this way, they can be absorbed into the blood and the breakdown of food particles yields energy and nutrients which helps to carry out day-to-day activities.
The process of digestion occurs in various stages which involve: ingestion, propulsion, mechanical or physical digestion, chemical digestion, absorption and defecation. It is clear that to maintain healthy gut, smooth functioning of all these processes is important.
Digestive problems results due to error in any of the process mentioned above. Stomach aches or constipation is a common stomach problem and we all have suffered from it. We tend to avoid such situations as it is awkward and uncomfortable. Some familiar digestive problems are constipation, ulcers, bloating, stomach aches, gas, diarrhea, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), etc. The underlying causes of digestive problems include a poor diet, junk food, lack of exercise, food allergy, food poisoning, etc.

Note: Dilution of essential oil invegetable or base oil is must before their application. This is done because essential oils are highly concentrated liquids. You will notice in all these recipes I have mentioned about carrier oils. Essential oil should always be diluted in the carrier or base oil before application. It is always advisable to have patch test before topical application of oil to avoid any allergic reactions. Always take advice from medical practitioner to avoid any unwanted situation.
- Essential oil Recipe 1:
- 2 drops Cardamom oil
- 2 drops Ginger oil
- 2 drops distilled lime
- 10 ml Jojoba oil
This recipe provides digestive support and enhances the functioning. It can be used either aromatically or topically. You can even create this recipe in a roll on bottle which can be portable.
2. Essential oil Recipe 2:
- 3 drops Grapefruit oil
- 2 drops Juniper berry oil
- 1 drop Fennel oil
- 15 ml Grapeseed oil
This recipe is preferred for detoxing the digestive system and acts as a cleansing recipe. You can massage your stomach with this recipe or incorporate this in aromatherapy diffusers.
3. Essential oil Recipe 3
- 2 drops Ginger oil
- 2 drops Chamomile oil
- 2 drops Cinnamon oil
- 15 ml Grapeseed oil
This recipe does wonders for stomach aches and cramps and we all suffer from it someday or other. You can simply inhale the mixture and let it reach your digestive system via nostrils. You can even gently massage to get relief.
4. Essential oil Recipe 4
- 2 drops Peppermint oil
- 5 ml Coconut oil
This recipe will help to increase the bowel movement and use of peppermint oil will support in relaxation of muscles. One can inhale or massage this mixture on the abdomen.
Digestion is a prime step in the normal functioning of the human body. A healthy gut represents a healthy human being. It is important to know the ways how to keep it healthy for smooth working. No wonder good eating habits with plenty of water intake and physical exercise helps to maintain good digestion but Essential oils put forward natural and organic ways to tackle problems related to the digestive system.
